The Sanctuary
Santuary of Flora and Fauna Iguaque
The air you breathe is fresh and clean. When you look up, you will discover a mountain with gentle slopes, overgrown by rather squat and dense vegetation with a variety of shapes and colors. This is the high Colombian Andean forest which covers much of the 6,750 hectares that make up the Sanctuary of Flora and Fauna Iguaque.
The main attraction for visitors is the ascent that begins on a path of environmental interpretation very near the visitor center “Fuzachogua”. The path leads ultimately, after a two or three-hour walk, to Iguaque Lake. The trail is designed to make the ascent manageable, passing first through forest and then through the wilderness that surrounds the sacred lagoon, an important part of Muisca Mythology. A hallmark of these highlands is the hundreds of “frailejón” plants, which the first conquistadors thought resembled friars when seen from a distance through the fog.
